Today is one of the best days on the track & field calendar: Diamond League Opening Day. Big-time track is well and truly back, and it will be here for the next four months through NCAAs, USAs, Worlds, Commonwealth Games, Euros, and the Diamond League final. For a sport where one of the biggest complaints is that nothing matters outside of the Olympics/Worlds, that's a whole lot of meets with serious stakes.
Today's meet in Doha (12 p.m. ET, viewing options here) doesn't have anything tangible on the line other than a bunch of prize money and some Diamond League points, but we're rapidly approaching the part of the season where we can start taking meaning from meet results. If Donavan Brazier shows up in Doha and gets smoked in his first 800 since last year's Olympic Trials, odds are he's not going to be repeating as world champion two months from now.
And while Opening Day is a chance to check in with athletes like Brazier and Faith Kipyegon who haven't yet raced outdoors in 2022, it also presents an opportunity for surprise. Someone we're not expecting is going to win an event today or come damn close. Opening Day is where all that fall and winter training is finally put on display.
So make sure you block off 12-2 p.m. ET on your schedule today. If you're on the West Coast, maybe head to the office (do people still do that in 2022?) a little late. On the East Coast, take a long lunch. And if you're in Europe, you're already set -- just make sure you find a working stream!
Once you're finished watching the meet, head to LetsRun.com for our LIVE post-meet reaction video show right after the meet where Robert Johnson, Weldon Johnson, and Jonathan Gault will break down all of the day's biggest stories. (If you can't make it live, join our Supporters' Club and get it -- and all of our bonus podcasts -- as part of your membership).
Donavan Brazier, Faith Kipyegon, Noah Lyles, Fred Kerley, Mondo Duplantis, and Dina Asher-Smith are just a few of the megastars who will be in action in the DL opener.
Did you miss the action in Puerto Rico last night? Full results on one page of the American Track League meet where 5 of the 6 reigning Olympic champions won.
The Diamond League kicks off in Doha today with the return of Donavan Brazier. Jakob Ingebrigtsen got a nice 5k win in America and had some interesting comments afterward on teen phenoms and the Olympic letdown.
Emily Sisson's assault on the roads got her the American half marathon record, will the full marathon be next?
Track and field super fan Derek Rubis joins us at the end to talk about his battle with cancer, the state of the sport, share some words of inspiration, and make a bold, bold prediction.
